Why this why now

Pupils will already have a basic appreciation of how fitness comprises different elements that are important to a greater or lesser extent depending on the activity. From the applied anatomy and physiology units they will also have an in-depth understanding of how our bodies respond to exercise and adapt to cope better after a period of training. Later in physical training they will explore principles and methods of training as well as how to reduce the risk of injury through overtraining or poor programming.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know the names of and examples of a few components of fitness in action (e.g. endurance, strength, speed, flexibility, power, agility, balance and coordination)
  • Pupils know that exercise and regular training are required to improve fitness and sporting performance
  • Pupils understand that health has physical and mental components but perhaps not appreciate the social element
