Key learning points
- Move: playing basketball requires speed and stamina to execute attacking play around the key and 3 point line.
- Think: movement off the ball helps to get free for a pass or screen to create space for others when attacking.
- Feel: remaining in your attacking role will build confidence to control the ball moving through the court as a team.
- Connect: effective teamwork requires everyone to take responsibility for their role in attack.
Keywords
3 second rule - an attacking player does not stay in the key without the ball for longer than 3 seconds
Screen - a non-ball handling player stands in the way of a defender to provide space for the player with the ball
Pick and roll - after setting a screen, a player moves towards the basket to receive a pass
Free throw - a shot taken from behind the free throw line after a foul on the offensive player when shooting
Common misconception
Pupils think they are not permitted to jump on a free throw.
There is no rule stating a jump is not permitted, however the feet can not pass the free throw line so players chose to keep their feet planted on the ground.
