Lesson details
Key learning points
- Move: using varied shots and angles creates unpredictability and increases the chances of scoring.
- Move: shooting on the move allows players to maintain momentum and evade defenders.
- Think: going into the ‘D’ is only permitted after the ball has been released.
- Feel: it takes confidence to jump or shoot while unstable, trusting your ability despite the lack of balance.
- Connect: having awareness of where the goalkeeper is improves the accuracy of scoring.
Keywords
Jump shot - a player jumps into the air to throw the ball at the goal
Shooting angle - the various positions and directions from which a player can shoot at the goal to optimise their chance of scoring
Shot whilst falling - when a player shoots the ball while falling or after losing balance, typically to avoid a defender’s block
Common misconception
Players are not allowed in the D apart from the goalkeeper.
If you land in the goal area (the D) after taking a shot, the goal will still count as long as the ball was released before you entered the area. However, if you enter the goal area during regular play, possession is awarded to the opposing team.
