Engagement patterns of different social groups

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can identify engagement patterns of different social groups and describe ways to increase participation for priority groups.

      Key learning points

      1. Gender can influence participation due to stereotypes and opportunities.
      2. Age can impact the type of activities individuals engage in and their level of participation.
      3. Socio-economic status can affect the opportunities individuals have to take part in physical activity.
      4. Ethnicity, religion, and culture can affect access and attitudes towards sports.
      5. Disabilities can influence the type of sports and level of participation, with adaptations often needed.

      Keywords

      • Priority group - a group of people who may face barriers to access physical activity and therefore have lower participation

      • Ethnicity - a categorisation of humans based on shared physical or social qualities into groups generally viewed as distinct within a given society. E.g. skin colour, facial features and ancestry

      • Socio-economic status - a way of grouping humans based on the amount of money they have

      • Gender - the social, cultural and psychological traits typically associated with one's sex (male or female), which encompass a range of identities beyond the binary framework

      Common misconception

Believing that certain sports or activities are only suitable for certain types of people. For example, girls don't play rugby.

Some people face barriers in accessing sport or physical activity, however, these barriers should be broken down to provide opportunities for everyone to access all sport and physical activities.

      Teacher tip

These five factors are most commonly discussed in exam questions but they also link to other factors that can affect participation.
