Marking and rebounding
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can mark a player and try to steal or rebound the ball using the correct body position.
Key learning points
- Move: making your body as tall and wide as possible when marking, closes down your opponent's space.
- Move: maintaining quick feet while tracking your opponent is the quickest way to stay with them.
- Think: diving in to steal the ball risks making contact which will result in a foul against you.
- Feel: use self awareness of your own upper body to pressure an opponent when off the ball.
- Connect: keeping your body upright and agile when marking the ball shows respect for the opposition.
Keywords
Tracking - closely following an opponent's movements and positioning to anticipate their next move
Defensive stance - a stance on the balls of the feet with knees bent to allow fast movement to the side
Steal - a key defensive skill to disrupt the rhythm of the opponent and take the ball from the offensive player
Common misconception
Pupils think defence is a solo effort and only needed when marking the player with the ball.
Individual defensive skills are crucial, however defending as a cohesive unit leads to the attacking team being denied spaceĀ and vision to move the ball.
Teacher tip
The activities in this lesson have a defending focus, however they can be used to emphasise other key skills such as dribbling, shooting and passing.
