Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: making your body as tall and wide as possible when marking, closes down your opponent's space.
  2. Move: maintaining quick feet while tracking your opponent is the quickest way to stay with them.
  3. Think: diving in to steal the ball risks making contact which will result in a foul against you.
  4. Feel: use self awareness of your own upper body to pressure an opponent when off the ball.
  5. Connect: keeping your body upright and agile when marking the ball shows respect for the opposition.

Keywords

  • Tracking - closely following an opponent's movements and positioning to anticipate their next move

  • Defensive stance - a stance on the balls of the feet with knees bent to allow fast movement to the side

  • Steal - a key defensive skill to disrupt the rhythm of the opponent and take the ball from the offensive player

Common misconception

Pupils think defence is a solo effort and only needed when marking the player with the ball.

Individual defensive skills are crucial, however defending as a cohesive unit leads to the attacking team being denied space and vision to move the ball.
