Key learning points
- Move: extending your arm above the head allows the aim to be in a higher position to prevent a block from a defender.
- Think: initiating the 2 step layup with the inside foot ensures the outside knee and elbow drive up to the basket.
- Feel: using imagery can increase success in shooting.
- Connect: encouraging each other after every shot will help to build shooting confidence.
Keywords
Lay up - a shot made from short range by moving with two steps towards the basket
Set/jump shot - releasing the ball from the above the head/whilst jumping
Bank shot - using the backboard for the ball to bounce off and into the basket
3 point line - a curved line on the court marking the distance from which a shot is worth 3 points
Common misconception
Pupils think that for GCSE assessment, shooting is only required in isolation to demonstrate the correct techniques.
Shooting needs to be seen in progressive and conditioned practices to showcase the technique when faced with decision making. The assessment will be based on the choice of shot or drive to the basket depending on the position of the defenders.
