      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explain the importance of family in Islam and how they have changed in the UK.

      Key learning points

      1. For many Muslims, the family is a central part of belonging to their faith.
      2. In the UK families are changing with many Muslim women now working and taking a full part in society.
      3. Both the Qur'an and the Hadith emphasise the role of a woman, both in the family and society.

      Keywords

      • Respect - treating others with kindness, even if they are different from you or you disagree with them

      • Hadith - is a collection of sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad

      • Qur'an - is the holy book of Islam; Muslims believe it is the word of God, given to the Prophet Muhammad

      Common misconception

All Muslim women stay at home and look after children.

Many Muslim women study at university and have highly successful careers as well as raising a family.

      Teacher tip

Organise a discussion where children can talk about their families. Invite a guest speaker to share the different roles of family members and how they connect with each other, including within the family and the community.
