Christianity and support for the family

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explain how and why churches support families.

      Key learning points

      1. There are many teachings in Christian sources of authority which show the importance of famillies.
      2. There are many different ways that churches support families in their communities.
      3. In the Roman Catholic Church children may be taught the catechsim in classes before their first communion.
      4. Many different churches run parent and child support, and sunday clubs or schools to support young families.
      5. Churches may also run activities aimed at supporting other groups within families.

      Keywords

      • Catechism - a manual of religious instruction within the Roman Catholic church

      • Rites of passage - special ceremonies that mark someone’s journey through life

      • Sunday School - often classes and activities aimed at children which take place during the time of the service for the adults

      Common misconception

That support for families only involves supporting young children.

Churches may also support couples intending to marry, counselling for couples who are struggling, youth activities and support elderly members of families too.

      Teacher tip

Students can learn about the way a church local to them supports families, they may compare this across two different churches from different denominaitons or approaches to Christianity.
