All families are different
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can describe similarities between families and explain why it is important to celebrate diversity.
Key learning points
- Every family is one of a kind and can look different, but they are all special in their own way.
- Even though families are different, they all show love and care, and do special things together, like traditions.
- We should celebrate and respect all kinds of families.
Keywords
Foster - to take care of a child who cannot live with their birth family
Unique - being one of a kind or different from others
Tradition - something special that a family or group does again and again
Common misconception
You need a mum and a dad to have a proper family.
Some families have a mum and a dad, but others might have two mums, two dads, one parent or carers. All these families are proper families because they love and look after each other.
Teacher tip
Give positive examples of diversity within families. Emphasise that all types of family can be loving, supportive and caring.
