      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can describe how to disagree with respect and kindness.

      Key learning points

      1. Good friends do not always agree.
      2. We can learn things when people have different ideas to ourselves.
      3. We can disagree respectfully and kindly.
      4. When we disagree with someone, it’s still important to listen to their ideas.
      5. If someone has a belief that means that they are unkind to others, we can tell a trusted adult.

      Keywords

      • Agree - to have the same opinion as someone else

      • Ideas - someone's thoughts or opinions

      • Disagree - to have a different opinion from someone else

      • Respect - treating others kindly and valuing their feelings, ideas and boundaries; for example, listening carefully and being polite, even if you disagree

      Common misconception

Good friends never disagree with each other because it’s rude to disagree with someone you’re friends with.

Good friends learn how to disagree with respect. Listening to and learning from the people around us is a lifelong skill that helps us to connect with other people and accept that we are all wrong sometimes.

      Teacher tip

Make the link between disagreeing and learning. Often, we disagree with someone initially and then realise that they have a valid point. Listening with respect helps us to decide when we might need to change our mind about something.
