More about sight, smell and sound

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use my sense of sight, smell and sound to identify things.

      Key learning points

      1. There are five basic senses in humans: sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste.
      2. Our eyes, nose and ears are used to identify sights, smells and sounds.
      3. Our sense of sight, smell and sound can help us to react to things and warn us of dangers.
      4. To help us to identify sights, smells and sounds, we can compare our ideas with other people.

      Keywords

      Common misconception

Pupils may not know how humans use different senses to stay safe.

Examples of different scenarios where humans use different senses to check for danger and to stay safe.

      Teacher tip

There are lots of activities to encourage pupils to use their senses. Play "I spy" or go on a listening walk so the pupils can identify different sights and sounds. See video to demonstrate specific aspects of working scientifically linked to the content of this lesson.

      Equipment

Pots, different objects for smelling such as pine needles, mint, lemon, vinegar, rose petals, banana, lavender, cheese and rubber bands.
