Lesson details

Keywords

  • Weather - Weather is what the conditions are like in a particular place at a particular time. For example, rain, wind or sun.

  • Season - Seasons are periods of similar weather. In the UK there are four seasons (spring, summer, autumn and winter).

  • Winter - Winter is the coldest season of the year. It is between autumn and spring.

  • Temperature - Temperature is a measure of how hot something is.

  • Thermometer - A thermometer is a device for measuring temperature.

Common misconception

Pupils may associate sunny weather with summer and not winter.

Explanation that there are different types of weather in winter, but the temperature is generally cooler than during other seasons.

This lesson should be taught in winter so that pupils have the opportunity to observe what the weather is like at this time of year. It is best to observe the temperature in the afternoons or on days where it does not drop below zero so that pupils do not have to use negative numbers.
Teacher tip

Equipment

A selection of clothing for different seasons would be helpful.
