Key learning points

  1. The Spanish vowels [a], [e], [o] are strong vowels. When they appear next to each other, they are pronounced separately.
  2. Numbers 16-19 use 'dieci-' + the numbers 6, 7, 8 or 9, all in one word.
  3. Numbers 21-29 use 'veinti-' and a number from 1-9, all in one word.
  4. Numbers 31-39 use 'treinta' + 'y' + a number from 1-9, in three separate words.
  5. Many months are cognates. Unlike in English, they start with lowercase letters, unless at the start of a sentence.

Keywords

  • Strong vowel - vowels [a], [e], [u] are pronounced separately when they appear next to each other

  • Cognate - words with the same meaning and same or similar spelling in English and Spanish

Common misconception

Months of the year are capitalised in Spanish as they are in English.

Months of the year are not capitalised in Spanish, unless they start a sentence.

You may like to extend the practice of numbers 1-31 by playing bingo. Ask pupils to write down 9 numbers from 1-20, 21-31 or 1-31, and call out numbers for pupils to mark off their game boards. You could also use the numbers to count items in the classroom.
