Key learning points

  1. Testing yourself on vocabulary helps you remember words and identify which words need more practice.
  2. In Spanish, the definite article (the word for the), changes according to gender and number: el, la, los and las.
  3. The opinion verbs 'amar' and 'odiar' can be used to say what you and others like or dislike.
  4. The endings for singular persons are -o for 'I', -as for 'you' and -a for 'she, he, it'.
  5. Subject pronouns (yo, tú, él and ella) are useful for comparing one person with another.

Keywords

  • Definite article - word for 'the', which changes according to gender and number

  • Opinion verb - verb that shows what someone thinks, feels or believes about something

Common misconception

We use opinion verbs without the definite article in Spanish as in English, e.g. I love Spanish.

In Spanish, opinion verbs always use the definite article before nouns, e.g. Amo el español.
