Key learning points
- We use direct object pronouns to avoid repeating nouns. In Spanish they usually go before the verb.
- Masculine DOPs are ‘lo’, meaning ‘him' or 'it’, and ‘los’, meaning ‘them’.
- Feminine DOPs are ‘la’, meaning ‘her' or 'it’, and ‘las’, meaning ‘them’.
- The verbs ‘probar’, ‘costar’ and ‘soler’ are stem changing verbs. When conjugated, their stem changes from 'o' to 'ue'.
Keywords
Direct object pronoun - replaces the noun receiving the action of the verb, e.g. 'me', 'you', 'it', 'them'
Stem-changing verb - verb that has a spelling change in the stem
Common misconception
Direct object pronouns go after the verb, like in English.
In Spanish, the direct object pronoun usually goes before the verb, e.g. 'pruebas el chocolate caliente' - 'lo pruebas.'
