Key learning points
- Indirect object pronouns (e.g. 'him', 'them') indicate the person or thing that is indirectly affected by the verb.
- To refer to one person or thing indirectly affected by an action, use 'le'.
- If more than one person or thing is indirectly affected, use 'les'.
- When reading words aloud in Spanish, stress the penultimate syllable for any word ending in a vowel, -n or -s.
- If the word has a written accent, stress the syllable with the accent.
Keywords
Indirect object pronoun (IOP) - replaces the person, people or thing(s) that the verb action is done to, when the action is to me, for you, to them
Common misconception
The indirect object pronoun 'le' changes to 'la' to match the gender of the person receiving the action.
'Le' means 'to him', 'to her' or 'to it' regardless of the person receiving the action, e.g. 'le doy un regalo a Lucía' or 'le doy un regalo a Daniel'.
