Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Applying knowledge about syllable stress reminds us how to say words that we may have forgotten how to pronounce.
      2. Reading aloud accurately supports our own and others’ vocabulary learning.
      3. We can say we know a verb when we can compose sentences of our own with its different persons.
      4. The verb endings for Spanish -er and -ir verbs are the same for 'I', 'you (singular)', 'she', 'he', 'it' and 'they'.
      5. The 1st person plural ‘we’ ending for -ir verbs is -imos; for -er verbs it is -emos.

      Keywords

      • Stress - pronouncing one syllable more heavily than other syllables in a word

      • -ir verb - verb whose infinitive form ends in -ir

      • 1st person plural - form of pronouns and verbs used to refer to 'we'

      Common misconception

Spanish -er and -ir verbs share the same endings in the present tense.

The verbs endings for Spanish -er and -ir verbs are the same for 'I', 'you (singular)', 'she', 'he', 'it' and 'they'. The 1st person plural ‘we’ ending for -er verbs is -emos, and for -ir verbs is -imos.

      Teacher tip

The speaking task in learning cycle 3 is a sentence-building activity; the focus is on pupils manipulating the new -ir verb forms from this lesson, and therefore the sentence endings are provided as phrases, to focus all of the cognitive load on the new forms.
