Key learning points
- Colombia is a country in the northwest of Latin America; its capital city is Bogotá.
- For -ar verbs, the 1st person singular ('I') preterite tense ending is -é, e.g. 'recaudé fondos' - 'I collected money'.
- For -ar verbs ending in -car, the 1st person singular ending is -qué and for those ending in -gar, the ending is -gué.
- The 1st person plural ('we') ending -amos is the same in the present and preterite tense.
- Time adverbs like 'normalmente' ('normally') or 'ayer' ('yesterday') help distinguish between past and present.
Keywords
Preterite tense - tense used for events completed in the past, e.g. 'I did'
1st person singular - form of pronouns and verbs used to refer to 'I'
1st person plural - form of pronouns and verbs used to refer to 'we'
Common misconception
It is impossible to tell whether the 1st person plural of -ar verbs ('we') is in the present tense or the preterite tense because the verb endings are the same.
The verb ending of the 1st person plural of -ar verbs is the same in the present and the preterite tense. Therefore we rely on time markers to indicate which time frame it is, e.g. 'ayer jugamos al tenis' - 'yesterday we played tennis'.
