Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Peru is on the west coast of South America; it has a rich history of indigenous cultures and Spanish colonisation.
      2. Atahualpa was the last Inca king. Francisco Pizarro was the Spanish conquistador who invaded Peru in search of gold.
      3. Spanish uses the preterite tense for completed actions. Preterite verb endings change depending on the subject.
      4. To express 'she, he, it' in the preterite, remove -ar and add -ó. This is the 3rd person singular form.
      5. To express 'they' (m,f) in the preterite tense, remove -ar and add -aron. This is the 3rd person plural.

      Keywords

      • Preterite - tense used for events completed in the past

      • 3rd person singular - form of pronouns and verbs used to refer to 'she, he, it'

      • 3rd person plural - form of pronouns and verbs used to refer to 'they'

      Common misconception

Peru has always been a Spanish-speaking country.

Spanish only arrived in Peru in 1532, when Francisco Pizarro reached the Inca Empire. The official language of the Inca Empire was Quechua, which is still spoken by more than 10 million people, mainly in Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador.

      Teacher tip

To adapt the B4b speaking task for pupils who need more support, teachers could provide the full Spanish sentences, so that pupil A/B chooses the correct option after hearing the sentence in Spanish but neither pupil has to translate from English into Spanish.
