Key learning points

  1. The 1st person singular (I) of regular -ar verbs like 'lavar' ends in -o, the 2nd person singular (you) ends in -as.
  2. Some Spanish verbs like 'despertar' have a stem change -e to -ie in some forms. For example: 'despierto' (I wake up).
  3. To say that I do something to myself in Spanish we use the reflexive pronoun 'me': 'me presento' (I introduce myself).
  4. To say that you do something to yourself, use reflexive pronoun 'te' before the verb: 'te llamas' ('you call yourself').
  5. The reflexive pronouns 'me' and 'te' look similar to the possessive pronouns 'mi' and 'tu' but they are different.

Keywords

  • Reflexive pronoun - used to indicate doing something to yourself, words like 'myself' and yourself'

  • Me - reflexive pronoun 'myself'

  • Te - reflexive pronoun 'yourself'

Common misconception

'Me' is a reflexive pronoun (myself) and a possessive adjective (my).

'Me' is a reflexive pronoun used to say that I do something to myself e.g. me despierto (I wake 'myself' up). 'Mi' is the possessive adjective 'my' used for masculine or feminine singular nouns e.g. 'mi madre', 'mi amigo'.
