Key learning points

  1. Spanish words ending in consonants other than -n and -s naturally have final syllable stress.
  2. If a word has final syllable stress and ends in -n or -s or a vowel, there will be an accent on the final vowel.
  3. To say 'my' before a singular noun, use 'mi', before a plural noun use 'mis'. Eg. 'mi revista' and 'mis zapatos'.
  4. To say 'your' before a singular noun, use 'tu', before a plural noun use 'tus'. Eg. 'tu familia' and 'tus amigos'.
  5. Adverbs of location are often followed by 'de'. For a singular masculine noun, change 'de' + 'el' to 'del'.

Keywords

  • Possessive adjective - a word that goes before a noun to show ownership or belonging

  • Mi - possessive adjective 'my' (m/f)

  • Mis - possessive adjective 'my' (mpl/fpl)

  • Tu - possessive adjective 'your' (m/f)

  • Tus - possessive adjective 'your' (mpl/fpl)

Common misconception

To say 'my' in Spanish we use 'mi'.

There are two ways of saying 'my' in Spanish. 'Mi' is for singular nouns (masculine or feminine) e.g. 'mi madre' (my mother) and 'mis' is for plural nouns e.g. 'mis padres' (my parents).
