Key learning points
- The SSCs [a], [e] and [o] are strong vowels which are pronounced as separate syllables when they appear together.
- To say possessive adjective 'our' in Spanish, use 'nuestro'. 'Nuestro' needs to agree in gender with the noun.
- The verb 'estar' is used to describe states. The adjective must agree with the noun in gender and number.
- To say 'more ... than' in Spanish use 'más' + adjective + 'que'. Ana está más feliz que Alex. Ana is happier than Alex.
- To say 'less ... than' use 'menos' + adjective + 'que'. Jun está menos enfermo que Sam. Jun is less ill than Sam.
Keywords
Comparative - form of adjective or adverb used to compare people, things or ideas
Más ... que - comparative structure in Spanish meaning 'more than'
Menos ... que - comparative structure in Spanish meaning 'less than'
Common misconception
To compare two things in Spanish we can just change the adjective like in English, e.g. 'angry' becomes 'angrier.'
To compare two nouns we use a comparative structure. To express 'more ... than' we use 'más ... que' and to say 'less ... than' we use 'menos ... que'. The adjective goes in the middle and still has to agree in gender and number with the first noun.
