Key learning points

  1. In Spanish, r is pronounced differently depending on its position in the word and whether it is single or double.
  2. Word-initial 'r' is rolled and pronounced as in 'rojo'. It sounds identical to the 'rr' in 'perro'.
  3. 'Gustar'-type verbs commonly appear after the indirect object pronoun 'me'.
  4. 'Gustar'-type verbs agree with the subject in number: -a for a singular noun and -an for a plural noun.

Keywords

  • [r] - pronounced as in 'pero'

  • [rr] - pronounced as in 'perro'

  • Indirect object pronoun - pronoun referring to the person or thing that is indirectly affected by the verb; in English, this includes '(to, for) me'

  • Gustar-type verb - type of verb that appears after an indirect object pronoun

Common misconception

'Me gusta' is always the correct way to say 'I like'.

'Me gusta' is 'I like' for a singular or uncountable noun, but plural nouns require 'me gustan'.
