Key learning points

  1. We use the affirmative imperative (a positive command) to tell somebody to do something or give instructions.
  2. For -ar verbs the ending is -a, and for -er and -ir verbs the ending is -e.
  3. Modal verbs express ideas like advice, possibility, or obligation. They are most often followed by an infinitive.
  4. Some key modal verbs to give advice are 'tener que', 'deber' and 'poder'.

Common misconception

The singular imperative form for 2nd person 'tú' is the same as the present tense ending: -as or -es.
