Key learning points

  1. Aurresku, Jota and Sevillanas are traditional dances from Spain.
  2. [v] is pronounced the same as [b].
  3. Regular -er and -ir verbs have the same endings in the preterite.
  4. Regular -er/-ir verb endings in the preterite: iste for the 2nd person singular and -isteis for the 2nd person plural.
  5. Use subject pronouns 'tú' (you singular) and 'vosotros/as' (you all) to give emphasis or to present a contrast.

Keywords

  • Preterite tense - a tense used for events completed in the past

  • Subject pronoun - represents the person, people or thing(s) doing or being the verb, e.g. 'I', 'we', 'they'

Common misconception

In Spanish, subject pronouns are never necessary as verb endings indicate who is doing the action.

We can use subject pronouns 'tú' (you, sing) and 'vosotros/as' (you all) to give emphasis or to present a contrast.
