Key learning points

  1. Listening to distinguish sounds e.g. [l] and [ll], improves pronunciation.
  2. 'De' can translate as 'from' and 'of'. It can also mean 'of' and show possession; this replaces 's in English.
  3. Some verbs have an irregular stem in the preterite: pud-, vin-, pus-, quis-, traj-, estuv-, dij-, -tuv-.
  4. 'Tú' is the subject pronoun 'you' and goes before a verb. 'Tu' and 'tus' are possessive adjectives and mean 'your'.
  5. 'Vosotros/as' are the subject pronoun 'you all'. 'Vuestro(s)/a(s)' are possessive adjectives and both mean 'your'.

Keywords

  • Preterite tense - a tense used for events completed in the past

  • Irregular verb - a verb that does not follow the regular rules

  • Stem - part of the verb that appears in all forms

  • Subject pronoun - represents the person, people or thing(s) doing the verb e.g. I, we, they

  • Possessive adjective - shows who something belongs to e.g. my, your, her

Common misconception

'Tu' is both the subject pronoun 'you' and the possessive adjective 'your'.

'Tu' without an accent is a possessive adjective: you; 'tú' with an accent is a subject pronoun: you.

Teachers may find it useful to include short starter activities most lessons, e.g. using mini whiteboards, to revisit verb meanings and forms, especially irregular preterite forms, as without plentiful practice, most pupils find verbs harder to retain over time than nouns or adjectives.
