Key learning points

  1. Regular -er/-ir verbs: 1st, 2nd, 3rd person singular PAST preterite (-í, iste & -ió).
  2. Some -er and -ir verbs whose stem ends in a vowel add an extra 'y' in 3rd person singular forms in the preterite tense.
  3. When forming questions including a preposition, place the preposition at the beginning of the sentence.

Keywords

  • Preterite - a tense used for events completed in the past

  • Preposition - a type of word often used to express direction, time or location

  • Stem - the part of a word that expresses its core meaning; in Spanish verbs this is the first part up to the -ar, -er, -ir

  • Infinitive - the verb as it appears in a dictionary

Common misconception

The ending -ió is always used with -er and -ir verbs to refer to she, he or it in the preterite tense.

For -er and -ir verbs whose stem ends in a vowel, add -yó to refer to 'he', 'she' or 'it in the preterite tense.
