Key learning points

  1. The perfect tense is used to express what has happened.
  2. To conjugate singular forms of the perfect tense, use 'he', 'has' or 'ha' (from 'haber') + past participle.
  3. To form the past participle of regular -ar verbs, remove the -ar and add -ado.
  4. Common irregular past participles are 'escrito' (written), 'hecho' (done, made), 'visto' (seen) and 'puesto' (put).

Keywords

  • Perfect tense - tense used to express what has happened, e.g. 'I have listened', 'I have bought'

  • Past participle - form of a verb used to form the perfect tense, e.g. 'listened', 'bought'

  • He - part of 'haber' meaning 'I have', used to form the perfect tense

  • Has - part of 'haber' meaning 'you have', used to form the perfect tense

  • Ha - part of 'haber' meaning 'she, he, it has', used to form the perfect tense

Common misconception

The Spanish translation of 'I have' + past participle, e.g. 'I have listened', is 'tengo' + past participle, e.g. 'tengo escuchado'.

The Spanish translation of 'I have listened' is 'he escuchado'. In Spanish, the auxiliary verb used in the formation of the perfect tense is 'haber', not 'tener'.
