Key learning points
- The subjunctive mood expresses actions which are uncertain, wished for, or that have not yet happened.
- The subjunctive forms of ‘ser’ and ‘tener’ are: 'sea', 'seas', 'sea'; 'tenga', 'tengas', 'tenga'.
- When forming a 'when/if' sentence with 'cuando' the structure is generally 'cuando' + subjunctive + inflectional future.
- In conversation, develop answers by adding opinions, reasons, examples/extra details and different time frames.
Keywords
Subjunctive - verb form that indicates actions which are uncertain, wished for, or that have not yet happened
Common misconception
After ‘cuando’ I always need the subjunctive forms 'tenga', 'tengas', 'tenga' to mean ‘I have', 'you have', 'she, he, it has’.
After ‘cuando’ we use the subjunctive forms only when the action is not yet real, or is uncertain. When the action happens regularly, we use the indicative forms ‘tengo’, 'tienes', 'tiene’.
