Key learning points

  1. To conjugate plural forms of -ar verbs in the simple present, remove the -ar and add -amos, -áis, -an.
  2. To conjugate plural forms of -ar verbs in the preterite, remove the -ar and add -amos, -asteis, -aron.
  3. Verb endings and time markers can help us to distinguish between past and present time frames in Spanish.

Keywords

  • Simple present - verb tense used to describe habitual actions in the present, e.g. 'I speak'

  • Preterite - verb tense used to express completed actions in the past, e.g. 'I spoke'

Common misconception

The only translation of 'hablamos' is 'we speak'.

The ending -amos also corresponds to the 1st person plural form of the preterite for -ar verbs. Therefore, 'hablamos' can also mean 'we spoke'. The context of the verb should clarify which is the correct translation.
