﻿Hello, my name is Jess, and today we're going to be looking at a story about clothes, and what we would wear when it's hot or cold. For this lesson you will need the symbols that are on this page. You can either print these off or take a photo to use in this lesson, a summer hat and a winter hat, sunglasses, jumper, scarf, flip-flops, coat, wellington boots or boots, and the symbols hot and cold. Press pause while you get things ready. Getting ready. There are a few things that you'll need to prepare before starting the session. A quiet environment with minimal distractions, so maybe turn off the TV. Find a place that your child is happy to work. This could be on the floor, at a table, outside, or any other place that they feel comfortable. Consider your child's sensory needs. This may mean checking lighting and other sensory distractions. Also think about your language when talking, keeping language to a minimum. Things don't always go to plan. Be positive and just enjoy the session. You know your child best, so if you know there's a resource that may work better and they enjoy more, please use that. Press pause while you get your things ready. The story that we're going to look at today is called Jess Goes for a Weekend Walk. Jess woke up on Saturday morning and looked out of the window. It looked very cold and wintery outside. I know this cause I can see the snow and the snow falling on the trees. "Oh no," she said, "What shall I wear?" What would you wear in the snow? And where do you keep your clothes? Could you go and show your adult where you keep your clothes and pick out what you'd wear in the snow? She looked in her wardrobe. She found the right clothes for the cold weather. What are the right clothes for the cold weather? She puts on warm trousers, a woolly jumper, and thick socks. Here are the trousers. Can you go and find a pair of warm trousers to match? A woolly jumper. Do you have a woolly jumper in your wardrobe? Can you show your adult where your woolly jumper is? And some of thick socks to keep my feet warm out in the snow. Do you have some socks on or could you go and find some socks? Before she went out of the door she puts on her warm winter coat, her wellington boots, her bobble hat, and her gloves. Her coat. Can you find a coat? Wellington boots to make sure my feet don't get wet. A bobble hat and some gloves so my hands don't get cold. "Perfect," she thought, "now I will not get cold in this wintery weather." She went out for her walk, walking through the snow. Can you see the snow in the picture? Would you be warm in the clothes you've chosen to go in the snow? The next day was Sunday and Jess looked out of her window again. Today the weather looked hot and sunny. I know this because I can see the sun. "Oh no," she said, "what shall I wear?" What would you wear in the sunshine and where do you keep your clothes? Can you show you an adult where you keep your clothes? She looked in her wardrobe. She found the right clothes for the hot weather. She put on a t-shirt and some shorts. A t-shirt and shorts. Are these what you would wear in the sunshine? Can you find some t-shirt and some shorts? Before she went out her door she puts on her flip-flops, a sun hat, and her sunglasses to make sure that she was protected from the sun. Some flip flops. Can you find any flip flops in your house and match them? A sun hat to keep my head from burning. And some sunglasses to protect my eyes from the sun. Can you find any sunglasses in your house? "Perfect," she thought, "now I will not get too hot in this sunny weather." She went out for her walk. The end. Here we have a grid and you can have a look and match or maybe print this page off and cut out the symbols to put where what you would wear when it is hot and what you would wear when it's cold. We're now going to do this activity together. I hope you enjoyed the story. Now we're going to look at what we would wear in hot or cold weather. Let's have a look at hot weather. In the hot weather would we wear a jumper or shorts? Can you point to which one you would wear in the hot weather? Well done. We'd wear shorts when it's hot. Let's have a look at another one. We're still in the hot weather. Would you wear a scarf or a swimming costume in the hot weather? Have a look and choose what you would wear. That's right. You'd wear a swimming costume in the hot weather. Fantastic. Let's have a look what we'd wear if it was cold weather. Would you wear a jumper in the cold weather or flip flops? Can you point to which one you'd wear? That's right. You would wear a jumper in the cold weather to keep you warm. In the cold weather would you wear trousers or a dress? Have a think. I think you would wear trousers in the cold weather. Well done. Now we have looked at what we would wear in hot weather and cold weather. Can you go and find some things that you would wear when it's hot and cold? To make this lesson easier, only ask the questions what and where. Give children the option between two items of clothes and no other options. Make it harder. Begin to ask the second stage of the questions, which are more difficult. These can be found in the resource pack. More ideas. Can the child find clothes that they wear when it is hot? Have a range of items and ask them to find what they would wear in the sun.
