﻿Hello everyone, my name is Christian and welcome to today's lesson. And in today's lesson, we are going to be looking at making and playing a cutlery glockenspiel. So we're going to make the glockenspiel, we are going to do some listening exercises, and also learning how to play. We will be learning different rhythms and learning how to change from one rhythm to another. Now you will need some resources for today's lesson but I will tell you what you need later in the video and you'll have plenty of time to gather your resources and get ready to make your instrument. Okay, when you're ready, let's begin. Okay, everybody, now we're ready to start our lesson and like I said before, today's lesson is learning to make and play a cutlery glockenspiel. So, we're going to be learning to create different rhythms to create a piece of music inspired by the Far East, and any parents or carers that are helping you do your work, you can support by making the instrument and listening for changes in the music. Okay, but first you've got a listening task to do. So we're going to listen to what we think is going to be the glockenspiel. Now a glockenspiel is made, the sound is made when we strike a metal bar with a beater, so we're going to listen to three examples of music and see which one is the glockenspiel. Get your ears ready, here we go. Here's number one. Thumbs up if you think that's the glockenspiel? That's number two. Ready for number three? Hm, that was number one, two and three. So which one do you think it was? Number one, number two or number three? It was number two, that was the glockenspiel. Okay everybody, now it's time to gather the resources we're going to need to make our cutlery glockenspiel. For this instrument you will need a pen, some scrap paper, sellotape, six pieces of cutlery, chopsticks or pencils to use as beaters, two long balloons, and some scissors. Now you can pause the video to gather your resources and get ready for the next session.

Okay everybody and welcome to the let's make section of our lesson. So, the first thing we need to do is have a look at our resources. Now hopefully you've had some time to gather your resources together, so let's have a look. Some scissors, please remember to be careful when you are using scissors as they can be very sharp so always have a parent or carer help you with them. Some sellotape, a pen, two long balloons, some cutlery, you need six pieces of cutlery. I've got a selection of knives, forks and spoons. Please use the kind of more blunt knives so they're not super sharp, but again, just be careful when you use them. We're going to need some chopsticks to play our cutlery glockenspiel., Okay, the first thing we need to do is to blow up our balloons, now give them a stretch, make it a little bit easier. Here we go. Now this gets tricky, we need to tie a knot in the end of the balloon so you may need your parent or carer to help you do this. So wrap it round, push it through, give it a pull. There we go, that's our first balloon done. Balloon number two. Same again, we're going to stretch it. Now let's have a go at blowing it up. And again we're going to tie a know in the end, so wrap it around our fingers, push it through and, oh, I didn't quite get it right that time. Let's try again, push it through and pull. There we go, balloon number two. So they should be more or less the same size when you've got them done. Okay, right step two. We need to take some sellotape and I've already done some here and I've just folded it into a little loop so it's all the way round because double sided sticky tape is the best to use, I just didn't have any around. So what we're going to do is we're going to take some sticky tape and put six pieces down one side of our balloon. Here we go, one, two, three, four, five and six. I'm just going to set that to one side and we're going to do exactly the same on the other balloon. Here we go, one, two, number three and number four, oh, here we go, number five and number six. So we should have two balloons with some sticky tape all down one side. Okay, now let's take the first of our pieces of cutlery and I'm going to stick it on my balloon here and across the other one, just like that. I'm going to do the same with all our pieces of cutlery all the way down our balloons. Here we are, a fork there, maybe another spoon and a fork. There we go, and finally a spoon. So that's essentially our cutlery glockenspiel finished, but what we do need to do is to number them up. So I'm going to turn it this way round and here's where you're going to need your pen and you'll need some paper. And I've just printed these out and I did these a little bit earlier on, just numbers one to six and we're going to stick them on, so we're going to number each one of our pieces of cutlery. So, number one and number two, and number three, number four, number five, and lastly number six. So that is our cutlery glockenspiel finished. Let's have a look at what we've got and how it sounds. So we've got six pieces of cutlery on our two balloons, labelled 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Now we're going to take our chopsticks, but you could use pencils if you like I just happened to have some chopsticks at home, and you're just going to lightly tap each piece of cutlery. Just like this. Yeah, it sounds wonderful. It sounds very much like an instrument from the Far East so join me for the next part of the video and we will learn how to play it. Okay everyone, welcome to the first part of the let's play section of the lesson. Now you should already have made your cutlery glockenspiel. Here's mine. You should have two nice big, long balloons, six pieces of cutlery numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and you should have some chopsticks or pencils at hand ready to play. Now in this section of the video, we are going to be learning section A and section B. Hm, let's have a look and see what we need to do? So you will see there are one, two, three, four, five, six boxes on top and six boxes underneath. Now in each box is a number and we are going to play the same numbered piece of cutlery on our instrument that's in the box. Okay, let's have a go. So get your chopsticks ready and we're just going to play 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and because there's only one number in the box we're going to play our instrument just once. Here we go. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Very nice, so that's our A section. Let's listen one more time. Very nice. Section A. Now let's have a look at section B, hm, it's slightly different. So we start with number 1, then we go to number 2, but you'll notice we've got number 2 written twice in that box so we are going to play it two times, then number 1, and then we're going to play number 2 twice again, then number 1 and, oh, there's no numbers in the last box, so we're not going to play anything. We're going to leave a space. Let's have a listen to section B. 1, 2, 2, 1, 2, 2, 1, space. 1, 2, 2, 1, 2, 2, 1, space. Oh, that sounds interesting. Now let's see what happens when we play section A, then section B. Here it goes. Space. . Space. Ah, it sounds really nice when you start to put it all together. Okay, now you'll have an opportunity to pause the video and practise section A and section B and I will see you for the next part of the let's play part of the lesson. Okay everyone, now you've had a chance to practise section A and B let's have look the section A and C. Now you'll notice section A is the same, so we already know how to play that. Let's just remind ourselves what it sounds like. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Ah, very nice. So we've already done that one, let's look at section C. Here it is. We're going to start on a different number, 6, 5, 4 and then there's a space with no number in it. So we're going to have a little pause then 5 and 4. Let's have a go and see what it sounds like, I'll count the numbers along as I play. 6, 5, 4, stop 5, 4, 6, 5, 4, stop, 5, 4. Ah, fantastic, it sounds very interesting. Now I'm going to play these altogether, section A and section C. I'm going to go straight through and then you'll have a chance to practise this at home. Ah, fantastic. So there we are, section A and section C. Now you'll have a chance to pause the video and practise this at home before we play the whole piece all the way through. Okay everyone, now you've had a chance to practise both section A, B and C. So what we're going to do now is have a go at playing the whole piece all the way through, and you can do this at home yourselves. So we're going to look at section A, then section B, then section A again, followed by section C. I'm just going to go ahead and have a go, so see if you can follow along with what I'm doing. Section A. Section B. Section A again. Section C. And finished. I may have made a few mistakes there but hopefully, with a bit of practise, I can get it right. Now, you'll have a chance to practise this at home so please pause your video, have some practise and see if you can make your own Far Eastern inspired music on your cutlery glockenspiel.
