﻿Hi, I'm really looking forward to our lesson today. I hope you are too. Before we get started, this is just a little reminder. We're here to support any approaches you might already be using and any work you might have already been set. We know that this lesson is going to be going up to so many different children and families. So if you're not sure about anything or have any questions, then please do contact your usual therapy team. Okay, today, I want to talk to you about your bedroom and how tidy it is and what you can do to make sure that all your things are always in the same place and that your room stays nice and tidy. I often get asked, "Why should I tidy my bedroom?" And why do you think you need to tidy your bedroom? Right, well, firstly, you need to keep it clean so that it doesn't smell and you don't have lots of stuff lying everywhere. When you tidy your bedroom, then you have a set place for everything, which means that you can find your stuff. You tidy your bedroom and you can then use storage boxes and labels, and you can get into the habit of having a really tidy room. Pause the video now to get the items you will need. You will need some paper, a pen or pencil, and then ask an adult if they have any storage bins or boxes, drawers, or plastic wallets that you could use, or you might have some that you know already where they are. And then for some of this lesson, you're going to be working in your bedroom, okay. Resume once you're finished. So tell me, do you know why we put things in the same place all the time? Well, I like to keep my things in the same place because it's mine and I need to take care of it. So if something is yours, you need to take care of it. It means that you can find it really quickly so you won't waste time looking for it. And it helps us to be organised. And when we're organised, it keeps us really calm and we feel confident. I want you to make a list of groups of belongings in your room, okay? So look at your clothes. You've got school wear, your socks, your underwear, your pyjamas. Those are all individual groups of clothes then you've got your shirts. You might have t-shirts or smart shirts or polo shirts, your trousers. And again, you can divide those into long trousers or shorts, shoes, and your coats. Okay, then look in your room and try to organise or group all the books you have. So you might have school books, reading books, magazines, puzzle books, and then look at your toys. Can you organise those into groups of games, puzzles, construction toys, anything else like that, okay. Pause the video now to do that task. Restart once you're finished. Right, I want you to make a list of your bedroom storage area, okay. Do you have drawers, a cupboard? Do you have space under your bed, behind the door? I like hanging coats behind the door. Next to your bedside, do you have a little bed side table? Does it have a drawer or cupboard or is it just a table? Your desk, if you have a desk, what type of storage is in that storage area? And then your toys, which area do they stay in? Pause the video now to make your list of bedroom storage areas. Resume once you're finished. Okay, now we get to the exciting part. We're going to sort your room or rather, I should say, you're going to sort your room and set aside a good amount of time for this. And the first thing that you do when you go to sort your room is you need to clean it, okay. So any rubbish packets, any food that you took up to your room, any mouldy old sandwiches you took out of your backpack, your dirty clothes. Clear all those things away, okay. So put all the rubbish that fit into a bin and put your dirty clothes into the laundry. The next thing you're going to sort is all the stuff you need for school. So are you going to have a separate section in your drawers or your wardrobe for your school clothes and your school shoes? And within that, where are you going to keep your PE kit? Are you going to have a set section for your stationary and for your bag? So have a look around and remember ask an adult to help you plan all of this out. The next thing is you're going to try and sort where you're going to put your clothes and your shoes. Look and see if there are spaces. If you share room, then try and see if you can have your parts or your belongings on one side of the room. Or if you can maybe organise it so that yours have a different colour sticker on the drawer or the cupboard door. Your toys, are they going to go into boxes? And then books, where are you going to put your books? Are they going to be next to your bed? Are they going to be on bookshelves? Have a look around and see how you can sort your bedroom. So pause the video now to sort your room. This is really exciting. Restart once you're finished. So some more tips for keeping your bedroom tidy, okay. Remember make your bed every single day. As soon as you jump out of your bed, at least pull the cover back over, okay? Empty your school bag every single day. Every day when you come back from school, put everything back in the same place. It's your belongings, it's your stuff. You have to take care of it, okay? You're responsible for it. No one else. You can try using plastic folders or plastic sleeves to help organise things for your routines. And it really doesn't matter what you're going to use as long as you use it all the time. So it becomes a habit which means that you're going to be far more independent. You're going to be confident. And you're going to know where everything is.
