﻿Hi, I'm really looking forward to our lesson today. I hope you are too, before we get started, this is just a little reminder, we're here to support any approaches you might already be using. And any work you might have already been set. We know that this lesson is going to be going out to so many different children and families. So if you're not sure about anything or have any questions, then please do contact your usual therapy T. Hi, I am so excited about today's lesson. Everything that we've learned over the last few days in the last few lessons about using , about improving our fine motor skills. We're going to put that all together in today's lesson using all of those skills and make a paper box. Let's go, please note, in this lesson we will be using scissors, so please make sure you are sitting down to do your cutting, make sure an adult is always with you while you are cutting, cut away from your body, carefully watch what you are cutting, always hold scissors by the handles and not the blades, don't run while holding scissors and only cut things which an adult has said is okay to cut. Okay, so we have had a really good few lessons all about our fine motor skills. So can you remember what our fine motor skills are? So they are the smaller movements that require a lot of accuracy and care, we have worked on getting our shoulders stronger, getting our hands stronger, look Using the two sides of our body together and using small tools like a ruler and scissors, okay, you have done so well, and having good hand skills is really important for when we need to be really careful and precise, instead of just using a lot of force, and this will help us make things in art, doing zeeps and with our handwriting. And remember, the reason why we've been practising our fine motor skills is because if we don't have fine motor skills, then our hands won't be so useful, and we'll struggle to learn new things, and it's also quite tiring. So today, we're going to make a paper box, okay? So, you need to go and get the following things, you need to get piece of paper, ruler, pencil, scissors, sellotape, you can also get some colour pencils if you want to to draw on your box. Or if you just want to make dice, then you can just use your pencil, restart once you're done. Okay, so the first thing we're going to be doing is drawing the outline of the box. Okay, we're going to make our own box, and so we're going to need to start by drawing out of shape. You're going to use your ruler, holding your fingers down nice and firmly, and you're going to draw four equal sized squares in a row with another one, the same size coming off of either sides of this so you'll see it on the picture after this. And it's quite a good idea to make the boxes big, another template that we have there's quite small but that's just a guide, so you can make yours bigger than that, and so you can see what you need to draw with your ruler, and as I said, you can draw pictures or numbers on the sides of your box. So there you can see the template, you can ask an adult to, to put dots in all the corners so you know where to join to, remember like we did in joining the dots or you could ask them to print it off for you, you know, whatever is going to make you feel most confident and comfortable. Okay, pause the video now and try and draw the outline of the box, restart once you're finished. Now we're going to cut out our box you're going to take your scissors and cut along the outside edge of the shape. This is really important that you don't cut out each square individually cause then you won't have a box and be careful and as accurate as you can go slowly and just don't rush. Okay, so here we can see, power finger, my scissors and remember when were doing our straight lines you have to cut into the shape. Okay, you can see my left hand is holding the paper, thumbs up, and then you're just going to turn the paper really carefully. Yeah. And you can see there, that I cut right to the point and then I turn the paper again. And have you noticed that when I put the paper in, I make sure that it's right at the edge of the scissors there, because that way I just have to do one big cut. If you put it there, you're going to end up doing loads of little snips, and that won't be as accurate. Okay. You're going to see that power finger again. There we go, turning, so you can see why I said just cut the outside edges of the box because otherwise you'll have 1,2,3,4,5,6 six little squares and not just one piece of paper so you'll need a lot more tape and it'll be much harder to then make a box. Okay, now what I could have done is I could have cut off that piece of paper that's trailing round the back, I just didn't, but if that's going to be easier for you, then cut off the excess paper with the bits that are on the sides, cause that's just going to make things harder for you. Okay. Okay, pause the video to try cutting out the box template. Restart once you're finished. Now the next thing we're going to do is Folding along the edges. So you're going to place your template on the table, and you can start off by drawing pictures or numbers on the sides of the boxes, and before you start folding, make sure that those pictures will be facing the outside, okay, so have it face down, and then you're going to fold your box inwards. And again, slow and careful. And there you can see, I'm doing some dots, and I've gone Oh, silly Lisa, that's too light, let's use a darker pen. Okay, and I am making a dice, I love board games. So I could use this. Yeah. And so now you can see when we doing, we're looking at how using both our hands together, my left hand is holding the paper firmly in place, Okay. You can see how slowly I'm going now you can see, that my arms are quite close to my body so again, I'm not having my arms up there, they just relaxed next to the side of my body. Yeah. Okay. There's my dice 1,2,3,4,5 and 6. Lid on the pen, very important, and again, another good example of using both our hands together. Okay, so you can see the lines, and, there you go I've turned it over so the pictures are facing down and then I'm carefully going to fold in. Okay, one hand's folding then holding and then flattening. Now if you have thicker paper, you're going to have to work quite hard to get your edges to be really exact and quite sharp edges, okay. And you can see your box is coming together beautifully. So pause the video now. Pause the video to try folding along the edges, restart once you're finished. So now to tape the box together, you can either do it on your own or you can get the help of an adult and you're going to get five pieces of tape ready so that you can put your box together about this long, okay, if it's too long is going to make it really tricky, so I'd say that's a good length over there. You're going to take one piece of tape at a time, and you're going to tape all the sides together, okay. You're going to try and keep the edges as close together as possible, and once you're finished, you've made a box, okay, you can also make this more challenging by using a tape dispenser, like this one, and look at that we have to use both our hands together, to take some tape off. Okay. And do that as you go along rather than having it already. So, I am getting the tape ready, and as I said, it just depends on what you prefer whether the tape is going to be ready beforehand or if you're going to do it as you go along. I like having them all there, it's whatever you prefer. Okay, so I put one bit on one half, and I hold them together and then tape that, okay. Another bit of tape, so put it on one, square first, pull them together, yeah, paper I used is quite thin so it's not ideal. And you can see what happened there was that I, I didn't stick it very well, so I just undid it, I could have just left it as well, and oh your box is coming together, my box is coming together, my dice, and I, joining those two sides so you only got two more sides, you can see the there's two pieces of tape left, okay, to continue that, sorry about the light, and then the last one is quite tricky, its like the lid, some box templates that you can find online and if you ask an adult or a carer to look for you, will have just a little bit of an extra edge that you can use to tuck in. A little bit tricky. Okay, and there's your box, a four and a six, oh a six hurrah. Thumbs up. Now you pause the video and try taping your box together, restart once you're finished. So if you have difficulty with any of the tasks, just ask an adult to do it for you and move on to the next one. You can if you make bigger squares, you'll find that it's easier to cut, fold and tape together, you can try using firmer card rather than paper if you're struggling to tape it together and if you're finding the taping is really tricky, you can ask an adult to do the first one for you, and that will then help you do the rest of them, or sometimes you might want to help with that last one that's a bit trickier.
