﻿Hello everybody, my name is Emma and welcome to today's lesson. I'm looking forward to today's session and I hope you are too. I can't wait to get started. But before we do, just a quick reminder, we here at Oak are here to support any approaches you might already be using and any work you might have already been set. We know this lesson is going out to so many different children and families. So if you're not sure or have any questions, please do contact your child's school or usual speech and language therapy team. In today's lesson, we're going to be adding a little bit more information to your communication passport. We're going to be thinking about the importance of positivity and praise. We're going to think of some new ways that you can celebrate your success, and we'll be adding all of this lovely information to your communication passport as we get it. For today's session, you'll need some paper and some writing equipment. You'll also need some colouring pencils or pens, camera, if you have one at hand, some scissors and glue, and some old magazines or newspapers, if you have any lying around. Before we get going though, you'll need to find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed for the lesson. Turn off any distractions or notifications that you might have running on your device and make sure that you and your adult are seated comfortably. When you're ready, let's begin. Okay, let's start by doing some talking and thinking about celebrating success. As we know, a communication passport is a way of passing important information on to other people. Over the last few lessons, we've included loads of really fantastic information, all about you. What's important to you and how best to support you. In today's session, we're focusing on celebrating success. Praise is so important for helping everyone to develop, not just children. When we're praising or telling someone something that has gone well, it lets them know that they're doing the right thing for what they've achieved. When we're giving praise, it's important to be descriptive though. That means we say exactly what has gone well. Being specific with our praise boosts self-esteem and helps children to know what they're doing well and what they should be aiming for. Pause the video here, to think back on your week. What were your successes? What went really well? When you've had five minutes to have a think about this with your adult, come back to the video and press play to continue. Here's an example of how you could record your successes over the next coming weeks or so. In your communication passport, you can create a page dedicated to your success and achievements. All you'll need to think about is writing down what's happened, when it's happened and even a little bit of information about what you did. This will be a fantastic resource to look back over and have a think about all the things that you're achieving in your life. So pause the video here to make a record page so that you can celebrate all your successes. Be sure to decorate this page and make it really personalised to you. You could find some stickers or colour in the page with all of your favourite colours so it's really bright and interesting to the account. Make sure that you're remembering to complete this every day so that you're celebrating your successes. Little things can make a really big difference. By finding just a few minutes every day to use descriptive praise or reflect on things that have gone well in our celebrating success diary will have a big impact on self-esteem. Another thing that you could think about incorporating in the home is something called a wow wall. This is where words of praise and celebrating success is a two way street. So you and the child both contribute to writing some wow moments. These might be when you notice the other person doing something fantastic, doing something that's worthy going on the wow wall. Not only would you use this resource to celebrate the child's success, but you would be encouraging them to notice and celebrate the things that you or other people in their lives are doing well too. Don't forget, if you can, make a few copies of your communication passport as well as the records of success and share these with school, other carers and people who help you so that they can contribute to recording your success as well. Make sure everybody knows where to find your communication passport. And remind them to check for regular updates. Encourage everyone to use this communication tool as a helpful strategy to get to know you, celebrate your successes and have lots of fun, interesting time to be. Well, that brings us to the end of today's lesson, but a really big well done on all the new information you've added to your communication passport as well as thinking about the things that you've done well and had success with this week.
