﻿Hello, everybody. My name's Emma, and welcome to today's lesson. I'm looking forward to today's session, and I hope you are too. I can't wait to get started, but before we do, just a quick reminder. We here at Oak are here to support any approaches you might already be using and any work you might have already been sent. We know this lesson is going out to so many different children and families. So if you're not sure or have any questions, please do contact your child's school or usual speech and language therapy team. In today's session, we're adding more information to your communication passport. In the previous lesson, we thought about your hobbies and the things you like to do. In today's session, we're going to be focusing on the things that you're not so keen on. This will help us to be very clear about the best ways to help you. So for today's session, you'll need some writing equipment, some colouring pencils or pens, a camera, some scissors and glue. You'll also need to make sure you're in a quiet place where you won't be disturbed for the lesson. Make sure you've turned off any distractions or notifications that you have running on your device and that you and your adult are seated comfortably. When you're ready, let's begin. Okay, let's start by doing some talking and thinking about the things that you're not so keen on. As we know, a communication passport is a great way of passing on information about you to other people. This information helps them to get to know you and how best to help you. So far, we've included loads of information about you. We've thought about what you look like, who your family are, who special people in your life are, your favourite items and things, how best to communicate with you, as well as your hobbies. Today, we're focusing on things that you're not so keen on and maybe don't like. Although it might seem strange talking about the things that we don't like, because this can be upsetting, it is important that we share this information with people so that they know how to help us. By telling people what we don't like, they can help us in other ways so that everyone is happy and feeling good. Here's an example of how I've laid out some key pieces of information about things I don't like. I don't like shouting voices, balloons, because it scares me that they might pop, and I really don't like having my iPad taken away from me without a countdown warning. Using this as an example, pause the video here to think about some of the things that you need people to know that you really don't like. When you finish, come back to the video and press play to continue. Another helpful information to include is some clear strategies around the ways that people can help you. Something that you might want to think about with your adult is what you're working on at the moment. It might be a functional skill, like buttoning up your coat or using your own spoon to feed yourself, or it could be something that you've learned in school, like counting or to read. By sharing information about what you're working on, everyone can get involved in helping to make progress. Here's an example of how you might want to lay this information out, but pause the video here to think about what it is you're working on. Maybe you'll need to talk to other adults. Try and take some pictures of the things that you're working on, and you can add this to your communication passport with an explanation of how everybody needs to help you with the steps along the way. Lastly, you need to have a think about how you like adults to help you. What works best? This is going to be different for everyone, but it's important that we give lots of very clear information about what works best for you. Remember, if you can, make a few copies of your communication passport as we go along, share it with school, other carers or people who help you, and make sure everyone knows where to find your communication passport. Remind people to keep checking for regular updates and encourage them to use it as a helpful tool to get to know you.
