﻿Hello everybody, my name's Emma, and welcome to today's lesson. I'm looking forward to today's session and I hope you are too. I can't wait to get started. But before we do just a quick reminder, we here at Oak are here to support any approaches you might already be using, and any work you might have already been set. We know this lesson is going out to so many different children and families. So if you're not sure or have any questions, please do contact your child's school or usual speech and language therapy team. In today's session, we're going to be doing lots of talking and thinking about friends. We're going to have a go thinking about what makes a good friend, and then I've got an extra special activity that I'd like you to give a go at home. So for today's session, all you'll need is the downloadable resource that's available on the Oak website with this lesson. In there though, there are some lists of things you might need for each specific activity. So do make sure that you've got your downloadable resource, so we can have a go at the tasks that are set through the lesson. So before we begin, make sure you're in a quiet place where you won't be disturbed for the lesson. Turn off any distractions or notifications that you might have running on your device, and then make sure that you and your adult or talking partner a seated comfortably. When you're ready, let's begin. Okay, let's start by doing some talking, thinking about friends. We have lots of people in our lives. We have different relationships with these people. A relationship is how we know someone. There are different types of relationships, as I said. Some of these are people in our family or who we live with, or are related to, people who we like and share interests with, who we might call friends, and people who we know because we see often because they are community helpers. For example, doctors or shopkeepers. People who we see sometimes because they're in the community, but we don't know very well, we might call them acquaintances. And then people who we've never met they're called strangers. So this first activity, I'd like you to get the downloadable resource and find activity one, circle of friends. Put yourself in the centre of the page, and then in circle one, think about, write down all the family members who are closest to you in circle one. Then circle two, think about your close and best friends. Circle three, any wider friends. And then if know them, think about who would be in circle four, community helpers and circle five, acquaintances. If you need to remind yourself of what some of these words mean, you can go back to the slide just before this one and press pause. When you finish completing your circle of friends, come back to the lesson to continue. Friendships are usually built on one or more shared interests. This is known as having something in common. Me and my friends, all like Minecraft. So that's what we have in common. Friends might talk to each other about their thoughts and feelings, and they also might talk about their experiences or things that are happening in their lives. Friends tend to know quite a lot about each other. And I'll take a moment to have to think about what makes a good friend. When you've had a moment to think about this for your adult press play, to continue. There are lots of qualities about people that make them good friends. A quality is how a person acts. Here, I've listed some of the top qualities that I think I look for in a friend. I think it's important when a friend is kind, trustworthy, fun. I honestly think it's good when friends listen to you, and they're honest. There's a few more ideas here too. If you'd like to take a moment to pause on this slide, talk about what each of these qualities is with your adult, then do that now. It would probably be really helpful to have a think about what some of these words mean. Now we're going to have a go at our extra special, extra exciting activity. It's called recipe for good friend. Using some of the keywords that I just shared, write out a recipe for a good friend. There are instructions in the downloadable resource to help you think about how to do this. How much of each quality do you think is important in a friend? For example, two spoonfuls of fun and a pinch of honesty. Then if you have time, you could have a go making some biscuit buddies using the recipe in the downloadable resource. When you finish thinking about your recipe or even baking your biscuit buddies, come back to the video and press play, and we'll finish the lesson. Use the downloadable resource to help you to continue to think about the qualities of a good friend. You could even complete the qualities dictionary to remind you what the key words meant. You could also do some research into your favourite movie or TV characters and find out who their friends are. You could make some friendship profiles on friends of yours and friends of your favourite characters. In the downloadable resource, I've also included some hints and tips on how to use Carol Gray's Comic Strip Conversations. These are a great tool for helping to understand social situations and managing friendships. Well, that brings us to the end of today's lesson, a really big, well done on all the fantastic learning and thinking that you've achieved today on friendships, Ask your parent or carer to take a picture of your recipe for a good friend or even your biscuit buddies and show your teacher at school so that they can see the fantastic progress that you're making with your social communication.
