﻿Hello everyone, my name's Emma and welcome to today's lesson. I'm looking forward to today's session and I hope you are too. I can't wait to get started. But before we do, just a quick reminder. We here at Oak are here to support any approaches you might already be using and any work you might have already been set. We know this lesson is going out to so many different children and families. So if you're not sure or have any questions, please do contact your child's school or use your speech and language therapy team. In today's session, we're continuing to think about naming words, and I'm going to be sharing some more ideas for how we can help you to develop your naming words at home. There's going to be some naming word activities, and then through these activities I'm going to be sharing some tips for adults so they can help you to develop your use of language throughout your day-to-day activities at home. So before we begin, all your need for today's session are some toys. Adults, you'll need some writing equipment and the downloadable resource that's available on the Oak website with this lesson. So before we begin, find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed for the lesson. Turn off any distractions or notifications that you might have running on your device, and make sure that you and your adult are seated comfortably. When you're ready, let's begin. Okay, let's start by doing some talking and thinking about developing more naming words. As we know, children learn to use words by hearing them lots of times and in different contexts. And the adults modelling language is crucial for language development. Children need to understand words before they can begin using them. Some of the first words that children learn to use and understand are naming words, nouns. I'd like you to pause the video here and have a look through some of the pictures of the things that you saw and the words you collected on your language walk in lesson four. Talk through the pictures. And adults, use this as an opportunity to model labelling. If you didn't complete the activity, then go back to lesson four and have a go now. When you've completed it, come back and press play and continue with lesson five. When we want to support our child to develop their understanding and use of nouns, we need to think about activities that really liked to do and then work the nouns into those. We can use these opportunities to talk about what the child is doing or looking at, and then label those objects. And that gives us the opportunity to repeat the words. It's also important that any words that we're targeting, we're repeating in different situations as much as possible as well. When we're exploring objects and new nouns, we can use multisensory strategies to really help those words stick. So we can make sure that we have pictures, symbols and gestures to go alongside those words to really reinforce them. So now it's time for a quick naming game. I'm going to show you some pictures. You and your adults need to talk about all the things that you can see in the picture. Adults, feel free to use whatever multisensory strategies would help your child to be able to. Pause on each picture page to take as much time as you need to talk through everything that you can see and name in the picture. It's important that when we're introducing and targeting our child's use and understanding of words, that we're doing this in interesting, motivating, and fun-filled ways. An example of a really fun-filled game from my experience children love it's called what's in the bag. This is where you take a little drawstring bag or even a box that's covered and you put interesting and motivating objects within it. Sometimes you might want to start with the child's favourite object to really hook their intention and engagement into the task. And you can bring out one object at a time, giving you the fantastic opportunity to label that object as it comes out the bag or the box. You can introduce other things like multisensory strategies into this task. So as you pull each item out, you could introduce a picture of it or a symbol of it and show that those two things match together. And then you could also play games where you say or show a picture of the object and the child then has to put that back in the box or in the bag. As I said, from my experience, children love this activity especially when it's based on objects of their interest or new and interesting objects that they've not seen before. So now it's time for a quick game of what's in my bag at home. Adults, gather up some of your child's favourite toys and other everyday objects. Bring one object out at a time and label it. Let's see how our child responds to each object coming out and the label that we offer them. Maybe there'll be able to label them too. That would be great. You could also think about introducing some multisensory strategies into this. So pictures or symbols of the objects as I said just before. When you've had five or 10 minutes of this game, come back to the video and press play and we'll finish up the lesson. For those children that are making good progress with that development of nouns, we can extend this by thinking about groups of nouns. So we can present objects, pictures, or symbols for naming word, and then facilitate activities where the child has to sort those items into groups. For example, you could sort objects in your bag into animals and clothes, naming each item as it comes out and then deciding which group that would go into. When you first start with an activity like this, start with two groups that are very, very different, for example, animals and clothes so that it's very clear what the difference between those two groups of nouns are. So let's have a go at this if you feel it's appropriate for the child. Adults, gather up some clothes and maybe some toy animals if you have some. Bring the objects out one at a time and then together with your child, label them. Why don't you have a go sorting objects into two piles as well? Remember, we want to create a language rich environment where our children are accessing words in fun-filled and natural exchanges. We want to be providing them with strong models of language and reinforcing any words multisensory approaches to really help the word stick. Create as many opportunities for talking and naming as possible. And remember, always have fun with words.
