Composition exemplars: creating a varied composition

Downloads can take a few minutes, especially for larger files or slower connections.

Why this why now

This unit builds on pupils’ ongoing composition work by deepening their understanding of how composers create variety and coherence. Using exemplar compositions, pupils analyse effective techniques for developing ideas across sections. This supports their own GCSE composition by strengthening awareness of structure, contrast and harmonic development at a point where they are refining and extending their creative work.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils understand how repetition and contrast are used in composition.
  • Pupils can develop melodic ideas using basic compositional techniques.
  • Pupils understand how texture can be used for effect and variety.
  • Pupils can construct simple chord progressions and understand basic harmony.
  • Pupils understand basic musical structure across sections.
  • Pupils can analyse music using appropriate musical vocabulary.
  • Pupils have experience developing compositions in response to a brief.
