Why this why now

Pupils will already know that some sports and physical activities have lower representation from certain socio-economic backgrounds and that it is important we break down these barriers to participation. This unit cements that knowledge from key stage 3, engagement in sport in the local community and awareness of press coverage relating to different social groups. Later in socio-cultural influences pupils will study commercialisation, ethics and behaviour and make connections between the media, sportspeople, sponsors, spectators and society at large.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know that some sports and activities have a bigger or smaller representation from certain societal groups (e.g. golf, swimming, lawn bowls)
  • Pupils understand the importance of challenging stereotypes and social injustice
  • Pupils are able to provide examples of minority or marginalised groups (girls etc)
