Description

In this unit pupils study the life of Siddhartha Gautama and reflect on his significance as a figue for devotees. They build on their understanding of dharma by examining dharma as skilful action. Finally they examine diversity in monastic life.

This unit builds on the dharma unit in Year 7. It goes beyond storytelling of the life of Siddhartha Gautama to consider the richness of interpretation of the three jewels and the diversity within the Buddhist community. It contributes to balance between Abrahamic and Dharmic worldviews and prepares pupils for study at Key Stage 4.

  1. Siddhartha Gautama as a historical figure
  2. The Buddha through the eyes of devotees
  3. Dhamma - skilful actions
  4. Dhamma - moral precepts
  5. Sangha - monks and nuns
  6. Sangha - diverse lay Buddhist community
