This unit comes at a stage in development where pupils take up their role as a young adult, possibly rebelling and bound by stringent rules. The content builds on learning aout the social contract as they explore why and how institutional religion formed laws, the social context of the time and their prevalence today. Pupils will explore the role of written and living authority as well as their own role in deciding how to live in accordance with personal values. In doing so, pupils are equipped to move on to the next unit which explores if and when it is appropriate to disregard authority.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils will understand what is meant by Torah and Bible.
- Pupils will be familiar with the story of Moses as a Jewish prophet and Jesus as the incarnation of God for Christians.
- Pupils will understand that theology is a way of knowing involving analysing sacred texts and the context in which they arose.
- Pupils will understand that , for Muslims, the Prophet Muhammad was revealed the Qur'an as the word of Allah for all time.

In this unit pupils examine how religions have created rules to live by. They will investigate how the ethics of Jesus reframed the Jewish law of the time and how Muslims may use the concept of ijtjihad to make moral decisions.
