- Ten groups of 10p is equal to £1 so 10p is one tenth of £1
- One hundred groups of 1p is equal to £1 so 1p is one hundredth of £1
- Ten groups of 1p is equal to 10p so 1p is one tenth of 10p
- Whole pounds are recorded using the £ sign and two decimal places £1.00
Keywords
Pounds £ - A unit of money used in the UK is pounds (£).
Notation - Notation is a system of symbols used to denote special things in maths.
Tenth - A tenth is the name we give to one part of ten equal parts.
Hundredth - A hundredth is the name we give to one part of one hundred equal parts.
Common misconception
Pupils write 1£ because that is the order in which the expression is said.
Provide plenty of opportunities for pupils to see and use the correct notation as well as highlighting wrong examples.
Plastic or real coins will be extremely useful in this lesson. Counters used to represent coins are a good alternative.
