Lesson details
Key learning points
- There are 12 months in a year.
- The months are: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December.
Keywords
Month - One of the twelve parts of the year.
Months of the year - January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December.
Year - A time period of twelve months.
Common misconception
Pupils may struggle to name which month follows December because it is the last month of the year.
The months of the year are presented in both linear and cyclical form. Having the latter displayed in your classroom and using it regularly to recite the months will help them to see that any of the months have a month that comes after them.
Create a large class calendar and explore other types of calendars too. Add special events, such as religious holidays, half terms and birthdays. Refer to it regularly and promote talk around it eg. pointing out the current month, the next month, how many months until a special event etc.
