This unit introduces the concept of light and dark tonal shading, which is an important foundational concept in the subject and how artists represent form on a flat surface. Pupils will have been introduced to basic drawing skills in EYFS and this unit will build on those to develop their ability to realise their intentions in mixed media.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Ability to hold art materials using an appropriate grip
- Appropriate ability to shade shapes using simple, uniform actions
- Appropriate ability to draw simple basic shapes

Moon and space: drawing and mixed media
Pupils will develop their ability to apply light and dark tones to shade the surface of the moon. They will create a space background and use collage papers of their own making to create a planet composition.
