Create planets and stars using collage papers

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use templates and monoprinting to cut out shapes accurately.

      Key learning points

      1. Scissors should be used with the thumb upwards, moving the paper to cut.
      2. Templates can be used to help an artist recreate the same shape several times.
      3. Templates and monoprinting are both processes that can help an artist to cut shapes accurately.

      Keywords

      • Scissors - a tool used to cut paper

      • Template - a guide that helps you copy something

      • Monoprinting - to create a one off copy of something

      Common misconception

Scissors should be held with the thumb on the bottom, and the index finger on the top.

Remind children that scissors should be used with the thumb on top, nearest to the ceiling. Scissors should also be held in the same position, cutting away from the body with the paper being moved.

      Teacher tip

Teachers may wish to cut the template in additional materials down to single shapes rather than giving the pupils multiple shapes on a sheet. This will make manipulating the paper more managable for pupils.
