      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can create a print using chalk pastels and water.

      Key learning points

      1. Printing in art means to make a copy of something.
      2. Marbling is a form of printing, as artists make a copy of the inks or pigment floating in the water.
      3. Historians are unsure where marbling originated, although it is thought either Japan or Persia are most likely.

      Keywords

      • Print - a way of making a copy of something

      • Marbling - floating inks or pigments on water, then transferring this onto paper

      • Chalk pastel - a soft and powdery art material

      Common misconception

      Marbling was invented in Britain.

Art historians are not exactly sure where marbling was invented, but it was certainly popular in places such as Japan a long time before it was brought to Britain.

      Teacher tip

To manage resources and support children with Task B, pupils could work in small groups rather than as a whole class. Images of planets or space for inspiration could also be prepared in advance.

      Equipment

Chalk pastels, printing trays, jugs of water, disposable cutlery, thick paper cut to a little smaller than the trays. Circular paper cut to a little smaller than the trays for Task B.
