Local areas and their migrations stories

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can create a clay crest to represent my diverse community.

      Key learning points

      1. Galleries and archives are a good source for understanding our local and national history
      2. Every area has a story which can be both joyful and/or difficult; art can help us to discover this together
      3. Migration stories help us to question what Britishness is and celebrate the diversity of our towns and country

      Keywords

      • Migrate - the movement of people from one place to another with the intentions of settling

      • Diversity - the practice of including or involving a people from a range of different backgrounds

      • Symbol - a shape, colour or sign used to represent something

      • Crest - a symbol or design that represents a family, group, or community

      Common misconception

A crest is for royalty only.

Crests are symbols used by families, groups, or communities to represent their identity, values and stories. They are not only for royalty, but for anyone who wants to show their heritage or what they stand for.

      Teacher tip

Use the symbols made in Task A as templates for making the clay crest. You may wish to continue with Task B in a later lesson once the clay crests have dried out and been fired. This will allow for further, symbolic decoration to be added.
