Why is it important to consider the views of others?

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I understand how I can use the views of others to make my citizenship action more successful.

      Key learning points

      1. Listening to others helps you understand diverse views and strengthens your arguments for decision makers.
      2. Considering different perspectives can improve your action’s methods and outcomes.
      3. Team collaboration builds communication and teamwork skills for real life democracy action.
      4. Sharing ideas with your team makes your action more organised and impactful.
      5. Working with others prepares you for active citizenship now and in the future.

      Keywords

      • Views - people’s opinions or what they think about something

      • Collaboration - working together towards an outcome, or to produce something. A campaign group, for example, should support each other and communicate well

      • Successful - achieving what you set out to do or getting a good result

      Common misconception

If you have a particular opinion or viewpoint on an issue, everyone in your group will think the same.

This might not be the case, as diverse perspectives exist. This is why it's important to test this during primary research to discover whether your identified issue is shared by others.

      Teacher tip

Use real-life examples and share stories where teamwork and listening improved an outcome.
