Common misconception

The term 'cooking' only means to add heat to food, such as baking, boiling and grilling.

The term 'cooking' includes: (1) the preparation of food, e.g. peel, slice and and mix; (2) heating food, e.g. baking, boiling and grilling. It is a term used to describe the entire process.

Teacher tip

To bring the lesson to life, allow pupils to handle a selection of different ingredients and equipment (highlighting any equipment that is sharp). Quiz pupils on the names and uses of each.
